do they just gradually gain experience as you ride/walk around with them, or do I have to do something more specific?

also, does the pet exchange system work the same way as horse breeding?

My horses seem to get more experience when I kill monsters, but I don’t actually know. I can answer your second question though. Breeding horses guarantees you a higher tier horse with random skills. Upgrading pets does NOT guarantee a higher tier pet. If it fails, you lose one of the pets while the other stays the same. If you succeed, you can either choose to keep the pet skill or reroll for new ones. M
